Default Dye Farming

I'm guessing this question has been asked many times before, although I am having trouble finding any posts related to this. After hearing that dyes are common in pre searing, I have kept a character there for the reason to farm them. Now my question is if dyes are common in pre searing this would include Black dye, if this is so is there a particular enemy that drops black's?

Farming dyes in pre-sear is mostly a waste of time. There are fewer enemy groups, and the enemy groups are much smaller, so the amount of foes you can slay at a time is very low compared to post-sear. Also, in post-sear, you have many more skills to choose from, all of your attribute points, and optimal gear. For the most part, if you can farm, you can easily farm enough gold in post-sear to buy the dyes you want, including black(you should be able to farm enough gold for a black in an hour or so). Also, since you can kill more foes faster in post, you will get dye drops simply by increasing the drop frequency.

The drop rate for dye does seem higher in Pre-sear, but as Tetris L, DeanBB, and Frau Braten pointed out, that is probably due to the fact you play the area solo and kill all the monsters.

if all you're interested in is to farm dyes, then your best bet is to find high population zones (lots of monster groups) in an easy to farm area (low level) and go solo and clear out the entire zone of monsters. I believe the more you clear out an area, the rarer the drops get? I can't recall where i heard that.

You won't make much money this way though. Theres no way to get reliable and consistent dye drops.

i've always found the catacombs to be reliable for dye drops... I've had loads of colours and silvers drop... Also 3 blacks.

Bu as other said, you won't get rich doing so. Mucho better sticking to farming trolls.

This last week I've taken a character through pre-searing - Admittedly no "farming", but levelling the character up took enough hours, and I made several runs through the catacombs stealing what little dye those Gargoyles would give up (they seem to be relatively good for drops, but it may just be my imagination).
The result: 1xSilver, 3xOthers

Yesterday, ten runs on the Droks trolls gave me (in a fraction of the time): 1xBlack, 4xOthers
(Not had a Black Dye drop in ages - somehow it's really exciting )

It does feel like the drop rate is higher in Pre-Searing, but as MisterB pointed out, the ability to properly farm an area in Post probably more than makes up for it.
Then again, let's face it - the only way to get rich off dye farming is to get one heckuva lot of black dye drops... There are a lot more valuable things to farm. Greens, for instance - some of them are worth considerably more than that Vial of Dye [Black], and their drop rate is higher (though sometimes it seems not by much -__-)

I had my first black drop last night in what seems like ages... unfortunately as been said, the drops are completely random.. so luck of the draw i guess

I have yet to see the claim that dyes drop more frequently in pre-searing than elsewhere backed up by solid statistics. I think it may very well be a false impression.

I have a Mes in Pre who has been farming all sorts of stuff ready for NF coming out. Dont forget materials such as scales, wood, cloth and tanned hides are darn useful and theyre easy pickings in Pre. Everything gets salvaged.

When I get a bit bored in Post I spend an hour or so in Pre. I have a fair few dyes too, but they are completely random.

^ Dyes mainly drop in the Catacombs.

Here is a map of what I called the "dye run", simply because I get an average of 1 dye every run:

Of course you could clean the whole catacombs but conveniently the length of this run matches with the inventory space of a pre-searing char. It will be full right at the end of the run.

It starts at the Abbey by the way.

EDIT - My pre-searing char is lvl 10. I did not make it to farm dyes, and I keep the dyes I find - that's a kinda... collection. I found only 1 black dye so far (some were luckier), 6 silver dyes, and countless "normal" dyes. My char is 39 hours old so I'd say I've spent maybe 12 hours in the catacombs.

I started a Mo/W in Pre the other day, after accidentally deleting my existing monk , and within the first 5 hours of play I had 8 dyes. No black, but 2x silver and a few other colours (2x Red, 2x Green, Yellow and Purple). All of them were from the undead in the Catacombs, which are a walk over when you're Monk.

My last toon thru pre-sear had I believe 5 dyes when he left, no blacks. He did score one soloing in Old Ascalon though, which is my first in probably 6 months.

I think the perception in pre-sear dye farming is simply the fact that you solo everything so all drops go to you and cumulatively you can kill a lot of critters.

I'd say just clear out zones solo in Old Ascalon if you want to try to land dyes but normal farming is better and then just buy them, plus it presents the opportunity for some good drop or rune or upgrade which you'll never get in Old Ascalon. Even hunting for materials there only produces 1-2 per salvage compared to the high end areas so is not worth it.

In Pre, I get quite a few dyes.
the catecombs run mentioned above works well, but I enter from the estate.
When entering the catecombs, make the first right and you will get to the circle much faster.
After the circle, I do the "hallway" full of undead, with the level 4 whatever at the end. This seems to be the most profitable run, for dyes, that I have found.
The Firestarters near ascalon drop a lot of dyes. The spiders / scale near ranik drop dyes for me, and the enchanted loadstones, in the Green Hills, behind Ashford Abbey is another place.
The scale near Ascalon have never dropped a dye for me.
These places all have one thing in common, a lot of enemies = more drops = more dyes

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have also found that the Blood Bandits near Fort Ranic drop dye as well. So far I have managed 20 dyes (4 being silver) but still waiting for a black. It's not so much that I like wasting my time in pre searing, but rather prove the rumor true or not about high drop rates and more black dyes. I might head over to the Catacombs to see whats there before I leave pre searing. Once again thanks for the infomation.

Good luck finding blacks. I've found exactly 2 in 18 months of playing. It easier and much faster to just farm 10k and buy one from someone.

Don't forget tho that you get less materials for items salvaged in pre or early post area's.
